Earth Island recall on food products
Earth Island is conducting a voluntary recall on its distribution of select Follow Your Heart brand products, including dressings and dips, as a precautionary measure due to possible Salmonella contamination associated with HVP recalled from Basic Food Flavors, Inc.  Please see the press release for a list of specific products and barcodes.  Follow Your Heart dressings are sold in grocery and health food stores nationwide.  Please ensure that these products are not being served in facilities.  The press release contains disposition instructions.

On Monday, March 1, 2010, FDA and CFSAN held a special 50-state call regarding the recall of hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP) by Basic Food Flavors, Inc. of Las Vegas, NV due to salmonella contamination.  HVP is used as an ingredient in the manufacture of a variety of foods and FDA expects related recalls to follow.

Please make sure this product has been removed if it is found in any of the facilities under DENR regulation.  Johnny’s French Dip Powdered Au Jus is distributed nationwide and is sold in retail stores.  Johnny’s French Dip Powdered Au Jus 6oz is packaged in a clear plastic bottle with a red, white and blue label. The expiration date for this product is 0332. Johnny’s French Dip Powdered Au Jus 1.1oz is packaged in a red, white and blue foil packet. The expiration date for this product is 02212.

FDA has created a webpage for the Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)-related recalls at http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/MajorProductRecalls/HVP/default.htm.  It is similar in functionality to the page that was available during the peanut butter products recall in that you have access to press releases, a searchable database of recalled products, and information targeted to consumers.  We will also place link from the Food Defense webpage (http://www.deh.enr.state.nc.us/ehs/dfp_fooddefense.htm).

I encourage you to take advantage of this resource as the number of recalls is expected to increase. There are only a few manufacturers of HVP in the country (Basic Foods being one) and it is used in many different products.  The products in the marketplace are at all levels of industry.
